Make up Trends -

2 01 2009

How strange that none of the Designers paid homage to the global economic meltdown. Whether this is a good or bad thing is rather subjective, depending on your outlook and depression predisposition.

From my part, I am loving the trends from the runaway of the fashion capitals:  Milan, Paris, New York and London.

The good news regardless of your own ‘OMG I might lose my job tomorrow’ meter, is that most of the key trends are very sexy and infinitely wearable. Thank goodness the very big and not very flattering eyebrows of ’08 seem to have gone fishing! May it never return from its travels.

You still will see some looks that were created only for the catwalk, with fantasy still playing ad nauseam. Alas, Galliano and Dior  decided to be demure for a change. Ladies, just keep in mind the Show part of fashion shows. Some of it should never ever be seen in Grafton Street bang in the middle of the day.

Having done by good deed for human kind by letting you know in no uncertain terms what I think of fantasy make up in every day life I move swiftly on to dissect the trends.

The Milan shows portrayed on a feminine theme and the make up obviously followed suit.

Feminine dresses and austere beauty

Feminine dresses and austere beauty

Prada

fail to dazzle, what with models wobbling all over the place in their 10-inch stilettos but the pretty dresses compliment beautiful flawless, elegant make up. Alas, the show was by far the most entertaining.  The Prada make up was strong but natural and pretty. Natural elegance with glossed Lips and chiselled cheekbones. This austere beauty look will be one of the key trends for the season.

I have sorted the trends into weareable looks for day and evening. I hope this helps and ensures you avoid Make up Faux pas. Seriously now, just keep in mind that a trend is only as good as it suits the wearer. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.

The trends from Milan:

Day

Sculpted eyes in neutral shades of taupe and bone;

Lip-gloss in neutral shades

Pretty pink flushed cheeks

Evening

Feline eyes

Orange/terracotta lips

Chiselled cheekbones

Louis Vuitton played the Tribal card resulting in a very strong collection and strong make up. Red lips glossed for that wet effect dazzled the catwalk shows of Dior and LV. Now ladies, Red lips, so big in A/W ’08 is still a big hit in S/S ’09. Mix it with a brown lipstick to get a terracotta shade that screams ’09!

New York saw a directional look, being both cool and edgy.  This translated to make up that is funky and wearable. Red lips were seen in the runaway but eyes were key in the NY shows. Beautiful defined eyes. Candy-bright painted lips also featured heavily in the shows.

New York trends

Bronzed American sunshine complexion

Candy coloured lips

Fluttery eyelashes

For evening

Feline Diagonal smokey eyes

Frosted pink lips

The shows in the capital of cool, London (where else?) played on the national individuality and quirkiness worshiped and witnessed in many parts of London. Blues, lilac and frosty pink were all seen in model’s eyelids. Homage was also paid to natural healthy looking skin and sun kissed cheekbones.
